Lopapeysa – Where Islands Brygge meets the Icelandic sweater

The story behind the name: A declaration of love to Bryggen

When I decided to open my shop here on Islands Brygge in 2022, the name was an obvious choice. In Icelandic, the word Lopapeysa simply means "Icelandic sweater." Because who doesn't know the classic, warm wool sweater with its beautiful patterns?

The name is a tribute to both Icelandic craftsmanship and our fantastic neighbourhood on Bryggen. Although we stock yarn for everything from the finest silk-mohair tops to coarse sweaters, the name reminds us every day what knitting is all about: warmth, tradition, and good craftsmanship.

From Microscopes to Masks: Meet Trine

Most of you might know me from a completely different world. Before I immersed myself in yarn and knitting cafés, I worked with microbiology and precision in the laboratory. As the article in AmagerLIV described, I traded my lab coat for wool when I felt a need to create something more social and creative.

In the lab, it was about cells and bacteria – in the shop, it's about fibres and community. But I've brought the precision with me. I delve into materials in great detail so I can give you the best guidance, whether you're looking for the perfect yarn for a classic Lopapeysa or yarn for your very first beginner's knit.

More than a Shop – a Destination in Amager

Lopapeysa is not just a webshop or a shelf of yarn. It's envisioned as Amager's coziest knitting café. My dream has been to create a sanctuary where we can slow down. A place where we share both successes and the inevitable dropped stitches over a good cup of coffee.

It's about the bonds that arise through handicraft and the joy of watching something grow in your hands. Ulla and Kirstine share the same joy.

Ulla is my good friend, and you'll meet her every Tuesday in the shop (and thankfully many other days too). Ulla has extensive experience with yarn and knitting, so you'll always receive expert guidance. Ulla manages the Tuesday knitters, which is a great success, and we completely understand why.

Kirstine is my daughter, and in the last couple of years, she has found great joy in knitting. You'll meet Kirstine every Wednesday in the shop, and she's always ready to help.
